Summer Show Report 2011
After the coldest
winter, the hottest Spring and the wettest June for decades, I seriously
wondered if members would have anything in their gardens for our Summer
Show. Amazingly my fears proved groundless when 83 exhibitors (10 more
than last year) produced 354 exhibits (54 more than last year) and all of
the highest quality. It was good to see some new names on the cups and
medals. Dennis Everatt took the Manktelow Cup and Banksian Medal for the
highest points in sections A, B and C. Michele Bertone-Walker had the cup
for most points for flowers and, once again, Ray Crump took the cup for
sweet peas almost unopposed, while, for the 27th time, Fred
Slegg took the cup for roses - who will beat him?! Eleanor and Anthony
Redshaw swept the board in the flower-arranging classes. Ash Lewis had
best exhibit in vegetable classes with her peas. Bea Hitchock had most
points in domestic classes. The Best exhibit in domestic classes went to
Margaret Rapp for her brilliant Ascot hat.
Photographic and
Craft classes proved what a skilful membership we have; awards will be
given at the Autumn Show for the most points over our two shows in those
classes. The childrens classes were well supported with some imaginative
gardens in seed trays, brilliant photographs and clever cooking.
The weather was
kind to us after a wet week. Valerie Burley and her team were able to
serve teas on the lawn, while the Crystal Palace Progress Band entertained
us. We seemed to have more Charity and general interest stalls this year
as well. A very big thank you to all our helpers who helped erect the
gazebos and move tables and chairs, and a very
special mention to Chris and
Brian Jefferies, without whom the teas on the lawn would not take place.
Once again I have
to thank your hard working committee. Did you like our smart new polo
shirts? Now you can tell who we are. Also thank you to so many other
members who helped in the putting up and taking down of the Show and for
everyones efforts in making this, once again, the highlight of our year.

ROAD
STEWARD NEEDED
I am still looking for someone to
become the road steward for area 9 - Carlton Ave/Croham Close/Lismore
Road/Selsdon Road/Carlton Road. I know this looks like a marathon round,
but in fact all these roads are very close to each other and the six
members live at the right ends of them. If you live in or near any of
these roads you could complete this round in 20 minutes. I did
it last month, including Brambledown Road, walking from my home in Purley
Oaks Road in one hour. Val Burley 8651 5837
RAINFALL
Kathleen Davies
recorded just 17.5mm (0.7 in) of rain for the month of May. The total for
June is 115.5mm (4.54 ins). 38mm (1.5 ins) of that rain fell on 6th
June which is the most in any one day since February 2009. John Morris
reports average high and low temperatures for May and June as follows:
2011: May high 65.0F (18.3C) and low 50.4F (10.2C). June high 68.1F
(20.0C) and low 53.9F (12.2C). 2010: May high 60.9F (16C) and low
47.1F (8.4C). June high 70.8F (21.5C) and low 54.3F (12.4C).

GROW YOUR
OWN BUTTERFLIES
With so much emphasis on
encouraging more butterflies, bees and other insects into our gardens, you
might be interested in having your own caterpillars and seeing them turn
into Painted Lady butterflies. I have just released 4 butterflies into
the garden. For further information log onto

Ideal for children but fascinating for adults
too!
